The Story of Us
I kinda wanted to see this, but the wife decided it was a definite. I was a little skeptical, but Willis had just impressed the hell out of me with Sixth Sense and Michelle usually does OK, so why not?
The story is centered on a couple that has been together for well over a dozen years, and starts out at the beginning of a separation. The kids are (thankfully) sent off to camp with the parents thinking they're fooled into thinking nothing is wrong, but the kids are hip to the situation. We live from both Bruce and Michelle's points of view, seeing high and low points of the relationship. They get along great, then have a verbal free-for-all; they make out and end up screaming -- AT each other, not WITH each other. Overall, it is a very accurate portrayal of how the dynamics of a relationship ebb and flow.
This particular pairing does really well in portraying a couple attempting to reconcile differences, first for the kids and then just because it feels right. Amazingly enough, I must credit Bruce for once again mastering subtleties such as voice cracking and repetitive character traits. He compliments Michelle well, and they carry this one off with little to no difficulty.
A really good flick for couples who have been together for a while (at least a couple of years), I would avoid this one for dating. It might frighten your partner off when they realize almost all relationships closely mirror what they're seeing on the screen. Don't feel bad about paying full price, but make the matinee if you can.
