Detroit Rock City
The previews for this one looked pretty stupid, and the movie didn't disappoint. I went in not expecting much, so I wasn't let down. But I think somewhere, deep down, I really hoped for a little more of some and a little less of other from this one.
There's no better way to describe this than to say it's the story of four losers who try everything they can think of to get to a KISS concert. But when one of the guys' ultra-religious mom torches the tickets, they have to resort to any and all means necessary to get there. After winning tickets from a radio station for a concert in Detroit, the group decides to road trip from Cleveland. When they arrive, they find the tickets have been claimed by someone else and that they are on their own. One decides to try to beat somebody up for their ticket, another decides to try to buy from a scalper, one tries to sneak in, and the last goes to try to reclaim their ride (his mom's car), which has been impounded. Happy ending: they all end up at the concert.
God, this movie reminded me of the GOH back in high school. I think that's the reason I enjoyed it as much as I did. The writing wasn't very good, the overall look of the movie was rather ugly, and the overall plot was incredibly simplistic with no real surprises. I think the reminiscing was what made this as good as it was for me.
I don't think I can in good conscience really recommend this as anything but a rental when it's finally out on video. See it on the same night you see Half Baked, preferrably as the later movie.
