Galaxy Quest
The reviews looked completely hokey, the humor was all tongue-in-cheek, and the main jist of the movie had to be nothing more than a not-so-subtle hint to Shatner that StarFleet uniforms only expand so much before you look like an Oompa-Loompa. I loved it.
In modern-day society, the cast of a 20-something year-old sci-fi show is still doing the convention circuit, milking out every last bit of fame they can grab. While most of the cast is ready to move on, none can get the break made because the leader of the troupe keeps booking them for cheesy shows. Without a clear idea of how they've gotten hooked into the real deal, the crew is transported into space to aid a benign race involved in a galactic dispute. The kicker: the race has based their entire culture on the television series, which it believes is a collection of historical documents, and holds the "crew" in reverential awe. Can a bunch of washed-up misfits really make it as bona-fide space heroes?
After all the crap I've read from all sides about the stuff that went on with Star Trek, this is just a killer laugh-fest. The pompous, egomaniacal captain; the token female star who really doesn't have a job; the classically trained actor, relegated to wearing prosthetics and saying the show's most memorable catch-phrase; the miracle-worker engineer; the child prodigy who can fly the humongous battleship on instinct; the private who gets wasted five minutes into the episode... I really enjoyed the humor, and Sigourney Weaver looks better than I've ever seen her. I just couldn't shake the feeling, though, that at some point in the movie, Tim Allen was going to slip and start a line, "To infinity..."
For Trekkies, this is almost a must see; the die-hard fans will be infuriated, the soft-core fans will just laugh. There is enough in this movie to give everyone a good giggle, though. Go ahead and see it, but make the matinee if you can.
