The Hurricane
At first, I was kinda unsure about seeing this movie. A documentary about a boxer? Even if Denzel is in it, how interesting can it be? Kick my ass. Just do it. What did I know? I finally saw enough about the story to get me interested, and now I can't say enough good about it.
Rubin "Hurricane" Carter was a man who had grown through a rough childhood, an even tougher adult life, and was now languishing in prison for crimes he did not commit. Who would have thought it was all due to an incident that wasn't even his fault that he had been involved in when he was 10 years old? How could that keep him in correctional homes and prisons for the rest of his life? How could a corrupt system be defeated... by a campaign launched by a 15-year-old boy in Canada, who had just learned how to read? The amazing true story will keep you riveted, and New Jersey stinks even more.
Denzel has always been good at what he does, but this performance really moved him to another level. How close can you actually come to feeling the pain of a man wrongfully accused and imprisoned without actually having it done to you? I'm sure Denzel could tell you. The truth behind this story, the power of its telling, and the soul that drives it are all the culmination of masterful storytelling by Rubin, in his book "The 16th Round", and "Lazarus and the Hurricane", by Sam Chaiton and Terry Swinton (two of the Canuks who helped to free the 'Cane). A great story of inspiration.
No question on this one. See it. Now. Go!
