Pitch Black

The previews for this movie had me eager, but I've learned my lesson about expecting too much (Me-saa STILL hate Jar-Jar). I didn't expect anything ground-breaking in the special effects department, but neither did I expect oscar-caliber performances. I went to see if a movie could scare me or at least give me the jeebies. Ehhh.
A colonist transport ship passes through the tail of an unexpected comet and gets sent out of control by debris in the comet's tail. An emergency crash-landing lands a small group of survivors on a desert planet, and sets loose a killer who was being transported to a more secure prison. Everyone believes their greatest threat is the convict, and finding water on the planet their second; what they don't know is what lies beneath the surface. On a planet with three suns, who would suspect a scourge beneath the surface that exists in pure darkness? It isn't too long before the stranded colonists discover the beasties, and follow that discovery with the prediction of a full eclipse...
I haven't been truly scared by a movie for a long time, so I figured this was my best chance in the near future. It didn't do too bad with the others I went with, but the only time my heartbeat kicked up was the first time the creatures appeared, when the woman captain of the ship descended into a cave. The special effects are nothing to really yell about (especially in light of movies like The Matrix), but they aren't lightweight either. Acting is good, but no outstanding performances. The characters are more developed than most sci-fi flicks, so some of the crowd got a little bored during the first half of the movie.
I liked this one, even if it didn't really provide the chills I was hoping for. Go ahead and check this one out. I would almost recommend a matinee, but it has to be dark out when you see this one.
