Runaway Bride
Pretty Woman II? That's all I could think of when I saw this preview. Obviously going for the chick-flick market and date movie dollars, this little lark is still drawing them in. I'm not sure why, but the women seem to get soooo much more out of this movie than the men. And not just because it's a date movie. It's something about the whole wedding thing that I, as a man, will never understand.
Gere is a columnist who writes a rather sexist piece each week for USA Today. While looking for a topic, he is told about a woman who keeps getting engaged and showing up for the wedding only to bolt at the last minute. Roberts takes offense to his column and bashes him in a letter to the editor, so Gere decides to go and follow her around to get the real story. In the course of watching her prepare for her upcoming wedding and chasing after her when she once again takes off, Gere falls in love and actually proposes himself. Will she say yes? If she does, will she actually go through with it?
Something about Gere has never really sat well with me, especially in romantic comedies like this. Roberts does OK, but it's not the performance she gave in Notting Hill and I got lost when the women in the audience would get an inside joke; the other men in the audience were puzzled, too.
I guess it's still a pretty good date movie, but if you can still find Notting Hill playing anywhere, go to that - you'll enjoy it more.
